Recent legislation has made it easier to verify auto insurance coverage in Rhode Island. The Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles has established the Rhode Island Insurance Verification System (RIIVS) to ensure compliance with the state’s requirement for active auto insurance policies. This online program matches the vehicle identification number (VIN) of all registered motor vehicles with an active auto insurance policy.
If a VIN entered into the system does not match an active auto insurance policy for four weeks, the system will send a notice to the registered owner of the vehicle. This notification, referred to as a Request for Insurance Verification, requires the owner to provide proof of insurance and comply with the conditions outlined in the letter. Failure to do so may result in the revocation of the vehicle’s registration, which would also prevent the owner from renewing their insurance.
